Whether you call it The War to End All Wars, The Great War, or simply World War 1, this tragic period of world history officially came to an end on the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

2018 will mark the 100th anniversary of this important date and commemorative events will take place worldwide with Rhode Island being no exception.

Please join the Middletown Historical Society as we welcome Mr. Matthew McCoy as he presents an overview of the work of the Rhode Island World War One Centennial Commission that is coordinating Rhode Island's remembrance of the war.  In addition, Matt will provide a briefing on the workings of the draft registration program in our state.

Although there are no longer any living veterans of The Great War, it is important that their descendents and indeed, all of us to keep the memory of their sacrifice alive.


Matt McCoy, a native of Washington, D.C., enlisted in the Navy in 1980 and served as a Operations Specialist, receiving his officer's commission in 2993.  In 2003, he joined Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems as a Principal Systems Engineer.  Following Raytheon, he became associated with the Naval War College and currently supports the Hattendorf Center for Marine Historical Research.  As State Coordinator for the WWI Centennial Commission, Matt is involved in numerous activities commemorating our state's role in the war.  He is also serving as National Aid-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Matt and his wife live in North Kingstown.
